What is it like being a female magician?
While I can't speak on behalf of all women, I am able to speak from my experience being a professional magician who is a woman. One of the comments I hear most often is how surprised my audiences are when they find out the magician performing at their event is a female magician. This is because magic for the longest time has been a predominantly male dominated field. When people think of a magician they often times say they think of a suave looking gentlemen in a full suit, pulling a rabbit out of a hat. I am none of those and that often surprises people. I usually arrive to an event in full glitz and glam, don't pull any rabbits out of a hat and instead try make my audience members the stars of the show, create enjoyable and humorous moments through the events and enjoy themselves. Which is uncommon for a magician, let alone a female magician. But how did I get to this point? You can find out about my early days of being a magician here.Â
Being a woman in magic has had it's highs and lows, however I have noticed that 90% of the clients who hire me for their events tend to be other women. That may be because I tend to market myself toward more woman dominated industries like schools, family shows, country clubs events, private parties and corporate social events. However, I think it's because women like supporting other women. Overtime I have had my fair share of awkward or uncomfortable encounters, but for the most part being a female magician has been extremely rewarding. I get to share with people something I am extremely passionate about and it seems to translate well to my audiences.Â
